Are we All Pessimists at Heart?

I’ve been obsessed with reaction videos. I just started subscribing to this fairly new channel that let’s you sit betwixt them on their beechwood chairs (wink). They were reacting to the last Hunger Games movie and it was the wedding scene. One of the reactors commented that one of them–The bride or groom–is going to die because “this looks too happy”.

Huh.

That really got me thinking. Personally, I would think the same thing. I can’t remember if I had the same thought when I first watched that movie. It was at the back of my mind.

I do find myself waiting for the other shoe to drop if I find myself in a situation that’s almost euphoric. I haven’t had that in a while maybe because I’ve been even more frequently anticipating the turning of the wheel as some would say. That mindset does take from the happiness of the moment.

I might be becoming more cynical as I grow older. It might also be from people surrounding me that seems to always take what I say the wrong way–Or rather, they always assume I meant to be antagonistic. It might be a reflection of how I’ve been treating people? Or it might be them projecting their insecurities at me?

I do admit that I am a bit brusque and I am working at it. No therapists as I can’t fit it into my schedule even if I can afford therapy. I try to understand people and see it from their perspective but they don’t do the same for me. It’s a bit isolating.

Hopelessness do sometimes rear its ugly head but that’s just it: why is it so easy to imagine a very good day as an omen to a very challenging one? Why can’t we think a rock-bottom day could also herald salvation and reprieve?

There might be a study somewhere discussing the exact topics and I could search for it but I’m not in the mood.

I’m just writing this before that thought gets buried under a very busy Regression Testing week.
