I Love the Rain (Until the Toads Come Out).

Petrichor and just wanting to curl up and continue sleeping. Those are what I love. If you add it on a day when you don’t have any errands or work then you have a clear winner.

I have a lot of fond memories about the rain.

I Love the Rain.

I grew up in an area prone to mild flooding. Mild because it rarely goes inside the house. We’d just end up muddy water literally on our doorstep. We would then make tiny cardboards “boats” made from small pieces of card stock wrapped in clear tape to make it waterproof. Before placing it on the water, we add a tiny blob of toothpaste on one of the edges.

That tiny boat would sail away with toothpaste as its motor.

I was also chased by rain once. For real. It was in college and we were going down a hill to get to class in another building. My friends and I were chatting a bit and we hear this sound behind us. Rain.

I put my hand out (more from reflex) but my hand remained dry.

Next thing we heard were footsteps. Running footsteps alongside the petrichor.

We turned around and saw our classmates running. Behind them was this wall of rain going downhill and heading towards us.

We ran hard and just barely made it inside one of the buildings. It was a miracle I didn’t roll down the hill considering I trip over flat ground.

That was a good memory. It’s been a while since I last felt that exhilarated.

Wait. Scratch that. I can remember the last time but it was less of the dopamine sort.

I Hate the Rain.

I was walking home from work. My shift ends at 9pm so I arrived at around 9:30pm.

It rained that afternoon so I’m very wary of things that come out during those kinds of days–Or nights.

I walked along the dark corridor with my trusty mini flashlight and made sure to check where I was walking.

The last hurdle was at the bottom of the stairs headed for my apartment. I took a tiny peek and… nothing. Clear!

I was home free! I almost skipped up the stairs. What waited for me at the top step was a big ugly toad! And it was staring at me!

I took a step back, forgot I was on the stairs, and almost rolled down said stairs. That would have been as nasty as that toad.

From then on, I added the top step on the list of areas to check.

What’s with me and toads? I honestly have no idea. Just the thought of them makes the tiny hairs on my arm stick up. I once saw a Gachapon with an illustration of a toad and I skedaddled out of there.

That fear made me realize something: I would never had survived studying in Hogwarts.
